so you wanna be a star… ?

starring julie

starring.... julie alexander and jeff klein.

because we have a place for you in treehouse :).

seen here, julie alexander – who works as a reading teacher in portland – spends her weekends acting in the treehouse for @lhkidz.

you see, this week, the star is very confused. we are learning a verse that says “then Jesus said to them again, i am the light of the world, and anyone who follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

we started advent. the first candle is “PROPHECY”, so we looked at different prophecies that were written 700+ years before Jesus birth, that were proven true when he was born. AWESOME. God doesnt have to do this… but yet he still gives us proof that we can hang onto.

anyway… our star will be a recurring character that will keep trying to do things that make him more God-like… when really he just needs to learn to let God love him… this week he was trying to be the light of the world instead of walk with Jesus, the light of the world.

we are so often like that, we think we need to work so hard, to hear God’s love. here’s the thing  – nothing you can do will make him love you more, or less. embrace it. like our pastor said today – rest in it. God loves you. Just how you are.

Thankfully.

if any of you want to participate in the fun we have in treehouse – finding new ways to reveal the eternal story of Jesus to the Long Hollow Kidz.

there are people in the congregation packin’

i’m personally packing for the beach…

but today we had an amazing workshop on safety and security at work. since i deal mostly with kids in my position… this is of utmost importance to me.

nothing will send someone faster away from your church than the feeling of un-security, un-safeness, un-detail orientation when it comes to the lives of their kids. security is our number one physical concern.

if you have worked at a church, you know that people dont remember to bring back their tags, or think they can pick up kids because they know you… and many times, they get irritated when you make them sign something extra or write down their information, AGAIN. and i’m always ok with that. you can be  mad at me … but you will leave knowing that someone cared enough about the matching XJ2(or whatever your randomly selected code is for that day) we need to see to give you back your child… and you will come back.

a generic fellowship one tag, the company we use to monitor kids

so, in our workshop… we learned about the team of people that are there each time we have a service, ensuring our safety. i love that. it’s not just the kids being protected, but everyone. we learned of their backgrounds in law enforcement at varying levels and degrees. let me boil it down for you though – in case you find yourself in a situation where you need to create security.

-we have armed officers patrolling our grounds and our buildings.

-we have visible law enforcement specialist all around, serving as a great deterrent.

-we have undercover teams you will never see, but you can still thank God for.

-places that have been the victims of mass shooting (active shooting) many times had no such deterrents or security in place (thank you long hollow for caring enough about all of us to go the extra mile)

-we all need to have a plan in place for extreme conditions. you, as the leader of a room, should have a plan in mind should anything go awry.

-when we go to lock-down. it’s real lock-down. like at school. just because you are at church, doesnt’ mean you can break the rules and leave your designated area to get your child. this will endanger you both. (now, i can understand if there is no security, why this might be tempting, but when there is security – trust that we are doing the best we can to keep your kiddo safe from harm)

-we need to have our eyes and ears open at all times, aware of what is going on around us. aware of sketchy characters… if someone just came to mind, you need to alert your security officers 10 minutes ago. they can only work with the information they have.

-we went through multiple active shooter situations from the past few decades. there were many things in common and they aligned with a terrorist attack. premeditation. lack of security. planning. altered realities that should’ve been noticed by someone. stemming from a hatred from a past hurt. the columbine shooters met all of these criteria, and it was parralelled with a terrorist attack in mumbai – eerily similar.

-we ended with a photo of a piece of heaven. our head security officer shared that we know that God is in control, and that evidence of God’s greatness is all around us. we need to look for it and be reminded.

this whole thing was not to cause fear, but to prepare us to love people better by protecting them. i love my church for this.

everybody’s got a story

this week i was thrilled to spend a 3 hour lunch learning someone’s story… our time together was treasured. tami, so glad we are friends.

every week i work at long hollow trying to find the most effective ways to help kids understand their personal story, and the way they fit into the eternal story of Christ.

next week i’m going to a STORY conference.

my friend, mike hurst, wrote a song for me (well for the LH KIDZ at my behest) EVERYBODY’s GOT A STORY. (working on getting a download option for you… you are going to love it. i know it do!!)

are you detecting a theme? tell me no stories… i’ll tell you no lies.

the song that mike wrote stemmed from a conversation we were having about love. my team had been talking about how we wanted to focus on LOVING the kids at long hollow. we want to have an atmosphere of LOVE. people have hard lives, kids are not immune to this, in fact, many times, kids get the brunt of it because they pay the price for adult choices. but you know what, that’s part of their story. part of the fabric of their lives… and how they fit into the savior’s plan for them.

(the song was to be a sort of cats in the cradle type thing pointing out that even though you think things are ok on the surface… everybody’s got a story, and if you knew them you’d be kinder to them)

we want the adults that are interacting with the kids to understand and realize that these are people with pain, and joy. some have lost a pet, some have a parent that has died or abandoned them, some are being bullied every day at school and no one knows. we want to show love, because we have been loved. we want to learn what is going on  with each kid. to this end… we changed our entire structure on sunday mornings. we took a huge leap of faith, that we would have leaders to meet the need we supposed was coming. we made it our mission that every kid at long hollow would have a person that knows their story. who they are. who the people are in their lives. what is causing them joy, what is causing them pain… we want them to know they are loved…

and here is why.

when they know that they are loved here on earth… it is easier to believe that they are loved by someone that they cannot see.

we are ambassadors, and do not take it lightly. and it’s all part of our personal story.

do you want your story to be something morbid like BLACK SWAN? or do you want to be victorious and overcome obstacles like ROCKY?

i would love for you to tell YOURstory on a new website. you will find the link here: http://www.hisismine.com/beta

and then I want you to listen to other stories. find out what people are going through. and love them. because you are loved.
