grace is. not “grace if…”

Image

i have been exploring this exact thing lately.
interestingly, it was a conversation with a recent college graduate, worship leader… and Lutheran.
Ben Eggebrecht (@myredandblue)
i asked him to talk to me about grace. I asked him to talk about the fall. i wanted a new way to think about how to teach. he was so excited to share, but prepared me to hear some new ideas.

he said something like this: so many churches teach how to be a better christian. what i remember growing up in the lutheran church, was that i always left relieved.

he explained that the sermon template is: teach the law, teach how we can’t measure up, teach “but the gospel”.
he went on to say that grace is … it just is. and it is for everyone. it’s not grace if…

this blew my mind. i realized that at times in the past i have fallen into the trap of teaching that our behavior reflects the heart of our savior.

for example, in the past I taught “Jesus forgave us, so we should forgive others.”
now I will teach “Jesus forgave us”, trusting that understanding this beautiful truth is far more likely to translate into action, than my directives.

it set me on a trajectory toward grace-filled teaching. now, everywhere i turn, or read, i feel that i’m affirmed in this intention.

how wonderful to realize, that really, you can’t do anything about how much God loves you. He just does.

You don’t receive grace because of something you do, or don’t do. Grace just is.

grace is for everyone.

grace is undeserved.

grace is freeing.

grace is beautiful and mindboggling.

grace is the best.

to a mom friend …

Imagegotta brag on your son for a minute… and also Tom Eggebrecht you’ll want to hear this. this weekend, one of our kids said yes to Jesus. (backstory: her parents are friends of mine from high school) tonite at long hollow she ran up to me and said “mrs. robyn, will you make sure you tell ben that i said yes to jesus this week?” i said “he’ll be so excited” – your son is such a blessing to Long Hollow Children’s Ministry he gives every wednesday and sunday to kids, and teaches them to worship. our kids are connecting with God in a real way, and we are seeing them make eternally important decisions. Man, I know you are proud of him, and so am I. What an amazing man he is becoming. Thanks for sharing Him with us, and praying for him – it’s clear that He is prayed for… it matters.  We are in a spiritual battle, and I couldn’t be more thankful to have Him wielding the sword of truth with us.

write here. write now. write on…

recently i’ve been caught up with the idea of writing songs. mostly because i want new songs for things…. and i was wondering why so many song writers were hesitant to want to co-write… until i had this really helpful conversation yesterday with ben.

the week before i had been talking about the idea of wanting to write songs, because i wanted a song that had a specific message in it … and wasn’t understanding why some of my inquiries had been shot down… but yesterday we were talking about writing in general.

ben is about to release a new song and he’s excited, but it’s been awhile since he released a new song so he’s anxious. a little bit. (he needn’t be… it’s a ridculously good song). anyway, in discussing how it can be nervewracking to reveal something you’ve been working on… this led to him talking about co-writing. when we talked about co-writing he mentioned how it’s difficult to co-write sometimes because you have to give up some of the control and sometimes it’s not EXACTLY how you wanted it. this made me think about scripts, stories… the things that i usually write. and i realized…i don’t really like to co-write either. not all the time, anyway.

i’d typically rather share in brainstorming and then one or the other person write the thing out. now, it makes sense to me… why certain songwriters dont want to give up the control or risk having to accept ideas into their work that they may not really want… with an untried, unproven writer. i don’t either! this was a very important lesson for me… humbling, and freeing at the same time.

now, sometimes you find your perfect writing partner… and that is why so many co-writers write so many things together… once you find one, that you trust. you will write with them any time. any thing. (my favorite co-writer is Jason Vaile. and i am grateful to have built a couple of great writing teams… wright’s direction team-book of destiny-ishine knect and currently lhkidz company of heartists).

i think because i have had great co-writers i didnt understand what i was asking when i wanted to write a song.

with that being said… i’ve co-written one song, that i’m waiting to see what happens. and am working on another. and once they are in a format that you can hear them… you will be the first to know.

i’m grateful for this realization and parallel. i love when you learn something while you are in a conversation with someone. that’s the best. thanks ben.
